Bio

I began my professional career with a 3-year apprenticeship as a silk-screen printer and lithographer, followed by work experience as a professional printer. Interested in further developing my visual skills, I decided to pursue a degree in photography (Dortmund, Germany). In my third year, I won a scholarship to spend one semester at the Parson School of Design in New York. After completing my degree and spending six months in Paris, developing an art installation (a stay financed by a DFJW grant), I was accepted as a post-graduate student at the Academy of Media Arts in Cologne (KHM). During the 2-year program, I focused on video, installation, and sound.

Upon graduating from KHM, I established my own video production company, developing and producing video-documentaries and video-installations for museums and other institutions.

A few years later, I began teaching, first as an assistant lecturer at the Bauhaus University Weimar, later as a full professor at the University of Applied Sciences in Kaiserslautern, Department for Digital Media. In 2002, I moved to the University of Applied Sciences in Darmstadt, Faculty of Design, where I am responsible for the development and the teaching of the ’moving image’.

From 2007 till 2010, I spent three years in China, working as a part-time lecturer in the “International MA Photography Program,” a joint venture between Bolton University, UK and Dalian Medical University, China.

After returning to Germany, I resumed my teaching position at the Faculty of Design in Darmstadt. I published two books, one about Interactive Narrative (2013), and one about alternative photographic processes used by artists today (under the open sky: Artists working with alternative photography, 2017).

My work as visual artist revolves around and questions the human condition as well as the beauty and fragility of nature.
